WMA
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is an audio format developed by Microsoft. It includes lossy, lossless, and voice codecs and was common in Windows Media Player libraries. Many non-Windows devices do not support WMA, so it is often converted to MP3.
M4A
M4A is an audio file in the MPEG-4 container, usually encoded with AAC or Apple Lossless (ALAC). It is the standard audio format of iTunes, Apple Music, and many voice recorders. M4A offers better quality than MP3 at similar sizes, but some older players only support MP3.
What happens when WMA becomes M4A
Source format
WMA is a Microsoft audio format with several codec variants, most commonly lossy.
Target format
M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that commonly carries AAC or Apple Lossless audio.
What changes
Audio samples are decoded from WMA and encoded according to the M4A format and selected bitrate or quality.
- What is preserved
- Duration and audible content are preserved, subject to decoder support and any settings you change.
- What may be lost
- Tags, embedded artwork, chapters, and codec-specific metadata may not map to M4A.
- Codec and quality implications
- Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.
- Realistic limitations
- Protected audio, malformed headers, unsupported codec variants, or files without a decodable audio stream cannot be converted.
Conversion steps
- Upload a WMA file no larger than 1 GB.
- Confirm that M4A is selected as the target.
- Start the conversion. A healthy compatible worker begins processing immediately.
- Download the M4A file and check the result before deleting your source.
Troubleshooting
- The WMA file is rejected or will not open.
- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The M4A file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- The result has no sound or will not play.
- Try a broadly supported target codec and verify that the source contains a decodable audio stream.
